This project was used to develop an aluminum can recycling project that was coordinated by special needs students but benefited the entire Blackwell population, students and faculty alike.  The seven students in that particular classroom benefited from this project as it met a wide variety of needs as outlined in their individual educational plans.  For the students, educational needs fell under a wide umbrella, encompassing every area of development.  The following will outline some areas and ways this project benefited them.
 

 
Functional Academic-
a.  Counting the cans collected and crushed in the smaller receptacles
b.  Comparing size and weight of bags of two larger bins on a weekly basis
Social Skills-
a.  This is a self-contained class, they will learn how to interact with a wider variety of students and faculty members than they normally do at the present time.
b.  Taking turns and working together as a group.

Communication Skills-
a.  Listening to and following simple verbal instructions
b.  Improving expressive and receptive language skills by increasing word knowledge and correct usage.
Daily Living Skills-
a.  Improve personal hygiene skills, by wearing gloves while performing task, and washing hands at the end of the task.
Community/Work Skills-
a.  Taking prepared cans to community collection sites as part of our Community Based Instruction.
b.  Using name recognition to determine whose job it is by looking at schedule board.


Motor Skills-

a.  Learn how to operate a simple non-motorized machine.
