This was a
project that was used by nine students who were labeled moderately intellectually
disabled. They ranged in word recognition skills from complete non-reader
to beginning second grade. Only one reading program existed for this
population. The program was the Edmark Reading Program. The
program used overlearning to teach Dolch Sight Words. This project
was to develop the teacher's own reading program based on the lives of
the students. By purchasing a computer program titled "Make-A-Book",
The teacher was able to generate books based on the lives and interests
of the students to encourage them to enjoy the written word. If the
books interested the students in the class, they retained more sight words
than they would if taught in a traditional manner. Furthermore,
the teacher wanted to purchase a computer program titled "Make-A-Flash"
which allowed the teacher to create sight word flash cards based on the
students' personalized stories.
This project
was to expose the students to words and to books. Research indicated
that moderately intellectually disabled students exposed to the written
word improved their reading skills. A data collection system was
used to measure reading improvement.
