Reading out loud
to your child every day or at night before bed may be about to become a
thing of the past. This project was to promote award winning
literature in the classroom, and allowed it to go home with students.
Caldecott Medal Winning Books was read to the class, and then became available
for "trips" home with students.
Each book received
a number, and went into a bag with an instruction/comment booklet.
After reading the book, the student dictated to the parent/guardian.
The adult wrote the child's favorite part of the book in a journal.
Each time a book was taken home, the child would read in the journal what
the child who previously read the book had written. Then he/she would
add their own entry.

Each student
had a check-out folder to keep in their desk. When a book was checked
out, the book number was circled in the folder. Students were able
to see what books they had read.
Students
greatly benefited from hearing good literature in the classroom.
If students and parents could share in learning to love literature and
reading, this could have been a life changing event for the students.
